I-285 Top End Express Lanes

OVERVIEW
  • The project is part of Georgia DOTs Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP), which currently includes 11 large-scale projects that will build a better Georgia by enhancing mobility and safety fueling growth, and improving Georgian’s quality of life.The scope of I-285 Top End Express Lanes focuses on adding two new elevated, barrier-separated express lanes in each direction on I-285, alongside the existing general purpose lanes.  The I-285 Top End Express Lanes will be part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes system, designed to provide drivers more reliable trip times. In addition, transit riders and state registered vanpools can utilize the express lanes at no additional cost.Proposed accessibility to the lanes will take place at the following locations within Cumberland but are subject to future design and environmental approvals:
    • Full managed lane interchange at Interstate 285 and Cumberland Pkwy
    • Half interchange, north/east facing ramps at Interstate 285 and Cumberland Blvd
    • Half Interchange, south facing ramps at Interstate 285 and Mt. Wilkinson Pkwy
    • Direct merge into Interstate 285 general purpose lanes between Cumberland Blvd and Mt. Wilkinson Pkwy
    • System ends and merge into Interstate 285 general purpose lanes south of Bolton Road

    There are five stages to the project; Environmental, Design-Build Procurement, Right of Way acquisition, Final Design, and Construction. Some of these stages take place simultaneously. The project is currently underway and is expected to be complete in 2026.
