Akers Mill Trail

Connecting communities to the best of what Cumberland has to offer

Akers Mill Road is a major traffic artery through Cumberland. The corridor connects Cumberland’s business district to residential communities and natural assets in the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area (CRNRA).

As multifamily communities began to develop along Akers Mill Road, so did the need for a pedestrian-friendly path to connect to Cumberland’s business district and recreational amenities.

In 2009, the Cumberland CID initiated plans to study a proposed trail along the eastern part of Akers Mill Road. By 2013, the Cumberland CID, and its partners, were ready to break ground on the Akers Mill Trail.

Akers Mill Trail Groundbreaking

The Akers Mill Trail is 1.2 miles long and connects the Bob Callan Trail to the Cochran Shoals Unit in the CRNRA. The Akers Mill Trail is 12 foot wide and paved. The width of the trail permits multiple users to travel at the same time, including pedestrians and bicyclists. Additional enhancements included landscaping, street furniture and the installation of decorative street and pedestrian lighting.

Benefits of the Trail

The Akers Mill Trail provides a unique amenity by connecting one of Atlanta’s largest submarkets with unspoiled, protected parkland. The Akers Mill Trail intersects with the Bob Callan Trail near Interstate North Parkway under I‐285 and Rottonwood Creek, then travels east along Akers Mill Road, parallel to I‐285. The trail has connections under I‐285 at Powers Ferry Road and under I‐285 at the Chattahoochee River.

The total cost of the project is $2.5 million with construction cost at $2.1 million. This project was entirely funded by commercial property owners in the Cumberland CID.
